Adult Learners' Week

Learning – You can do it!

Adults on Anglesey are being encouraged to take the first steps on a vital journey into learning next week.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council alongside the Anglesey Community Education Partnership will be hosting a whole host of special events during Adult Learners’ Week (May 15-22).

These taster sessions, which range from basic construction to flower arranging, are being staged at a number of venues across the Island.

They form part of a week long festival of adult learning, co-ordinated by NIACE Dysgu Cymru and backed by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Social Fund.

Other taster sessions will include learning how to Salsa, art history, gardening basics, an angling demonstration, keeping fit and there will also be an Eisteddfod for Welsh Learners from across Anglesey and Gwynedd.

Adult Learners’ Week activities will culminate with a celebration event at the Memorial Hall in Amlwch.

Anglesey’s Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator, Bethan Hughes-Jones, explained, “Adult Learners’ Week is a major festival of learning to encourage more people to take a first step back into learning. This year’s theme is ‘You can do it!’ The week also represents a celebration of the growing number of adults in Wales who have enriched their lives and improved their prospects through education and training.”

She added, “No-one is ever too old to set out on a new learning journey. Lifelong learning is vital in terms of continued personal development and new opportunities should be grasped when they arise.”

This year, more than 700 fun learning events will be taking place all over Wales, with a staggering 20,000 people having a go at something new.

Kay Smith, of NIACE Dysgu Cymru, said, “Local events demonstrate to people how learning can be fun, flexible and how it can open up a whole new world of possibilities. The only way people are going to find out what learning can do for them is by giving it a try and Adult Learners’ Week provides the perfect opportunity for adults to do just that.”
